How many of your employees would be able to echo Al Pacino's words as he was discussing his excitement about an early job at Commentary Magazine, "When I came to work, I didn't just come to work. I leaped to work."? For most Managers, that would be music to our ears. One tip for creating environments where engaged, energized, and committed employees will thrive is to identify each employee's priorities and goals and then give them opportunities to use their strengths to accomplish their goals. At the end of the day, each of us wants to feel understood, respected, appreciated and valued - satisfaction comes from knowing we have contributed our best and made a difference. Our DiSC tools are an excellent resource for identifying employee's positive goal motivated behavior and provides ideas for engaging them and causing them to leap to work!! For instance, I am the influencing style and I am energized by an Active, Fast Paced, Dynamic, Enthusiastic and Fun environment that puts a high priority on people and relationships and approval. I need to participate and am very good at seeing the best in people (and providing positive reinforcement and feedback). I am resourceful and excellent at connecting people and projects because I put a high priority on building relationships. These are things that will cause me to leap to work. If you want to de-motivate me, all you have to do is reject, ignore, or blame me or disapprove of me. Oh yes, you could also make sure my day is filled with boring routine tasks, unfriendly people, rigid schedules, or worse yet make me work in a cubicle or room all by myself. These are things that will cause me to get stuck and become a performance problem. Yes, I am only one of 4 styles and the Dominance, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness have entirely different goals, priorities, strengths, and fears (and we are going to talk about each of those in future blogs). Manager, how much value would you gain by understanding each person on your team so you could create environments that are ideally suited for each employee that would cause them to leap to work? If you are struggling with identifying each individual's goals and motivators, you may want to check out the Everything DiSC Workplace Profile.
